The Words @ The Stamford Arms, Stalybridge
4th July 2008
With the rep of being able to fill short notice slots, when The Words were called to arms .. well The Stamford Arms to be exact ... they naturally stepped into the breech and Stalybridge welcomed back to the gig circuit their favourite sons. It's even more remarkable as the past 8 months has seen them take a step back taking a well earned rest from their previous two years of relentless gigging in order to re-charge their batteries and write and record even bigger and better stuff than before. However, Friday night saw them slip into their role with consummate ease just showing what a tight, dedicated and professional band they really are to be able to pull off a quality performance at such short notice.
With their return gig booked for The Castle, Oldham next Friday night (11th July) this impromptu session was the perfect warm up for them and they proudly presented their new set which is a perfect balance of old and new with firm favourites and crowd pleasers Holding Up The Walls, F.A.G. and Rhythm Of Life tweaked up a notch or two alongside new songs Time, Movers & Shakers and the re-worked Cliff Richard that turn the 'wow' factor up to red hot... this is a set not to be missed.
With their set over they took a short break but returned to the stage to delight the audience with a second session of The Words classics .. sweet! The Words were on a roll and it didn't end there either .... still enough time to get well lubricated with the amber nectar they eventually got up and did another short set on demand.
What can you say? These guys deliver and some! They have a great live sound which has naturally evolved a much edgier feel to it and as for performance? They stand and deliver every time.... not even Dick Turpin could get them to deliver any more than they do!
This was a taster of what is to come this summer and I for one can't wait, I will be at as many of their gigs as I can possibly fit in, you'd do well to join me!
The Words will never let you down.
Nice one guys .. see you next time.
