The LA Chronicles

Here we are live from Los Angeles California. We're well into the second week of tracking for Koopa's record with Mark Hoppus and his trusty engineer Chris Holmes. Mark and Travis Barker's studio is a cool setup and kind of hidden away, you wouldn't know that it exists if you weren't looking for it. The drum room is also set up in the room where the front door to the place is, so it was very funny on the first day of tracking when there was a knock at the door and Stu Cooper opened it to see Travis Barker coming into work. Travis is a idol of most young rock drummers out there today so it was a pleasant surprise.

Added to this, Stu was playing Travis' signature Orange County kit for the drums on the record, it contains one of the largest kick drums we have ever seen

Mark and Chris have both been a pleasure to work with and Mark has been posting about Koopa and the project on his website where you can also hear Koopa on one of his podcasts whilst they are in the studio.

It was roasting hot here on the weekend that just passed with temperatures getting up to the mid 30s (that's almost 100 in farenheit) on both Saturday and Sunday. The boys took advantage of the good weather and Sunday saw us on a class outing to Universal Studios for a few hours. We took the tour of the Universal Studios backlot where they have the ready made sets for a lot of their big movies. All very impressive stuff

Afterwards things started to deteriorate and it was time to get the boys out of there as the tomfoolery was starting to become more prevalent and the sunburn more fierce

The boys are continuing to track each day and there are more adventures on the horizon that you'll be able to keep hearing about right here. Stay happy on The-muzic.com until next time.

Heading Into the Studio

Here we are at the end of another week and it's been a good one. Pied Piper Records and Koopa are getting ready to head into the studio with Mark Hoppus. Pre production is now at an end and the guys are sharpening their tools ready for business in Studio City California. It's going to be stressful, nerve-wracking, exciting and ultimately rewarding for the boys from Essex as Mark's music has had a huge influence on them over the years and it will be a bit surreal to have him giving his two cents on their tunes.

I've been having a close listen to the bands on The-muzic.com and the new songs being posted. I've been impressed by a lot of them. My list of bands that you readers should check out are as follows:

Arcadian Kicks

Snob Scrilla

John Tropea

To those of you already signed up with tunes already on the site, keep submitting new tunes as we go through the new additions each week in order to pick our favourites.

To those of you yet to create your artist page...what are you waiting for?

Have a good weekend people.
The end of a long weekend

Here we are at the end of another Easter weekend. Hopefully some of you found the eggs that were hidden and that they weren't broken or of the rotten variety.

Long weekends alway seem to give us time for reflection and to catch our breath somewhat in what is becoming a seriously busy western society. I don't know if many of you have the same sense that the minutes turn into hours, day, weeks, months and quite scarily years, without you realising that there is a bit more happening that the digits changing on the calendar.

There were a couple of things that really opened my eyes this Easter weekend. The first thing was, I was talking to a friend about CDs and the latest releases to come out and he was telling me about an album that he had seen whilst browsing in a store in town. I went to say something and realised that it has been probably 12 months since I set foot into a dedicated record store. I've bought plenty of albums and singles in the last 12 months, but it's either been mp3s or CD ordered through amazon and the like. It has become so easy to shop online through vehicles like snocap which is right there on so many artists' websites and also through sites like CD Baby which stock your CDs regardless of whether you are Tom, Dick or Harry.

The big question I asked myself, is do I feel bad about not going into the record stores any more? My answer was that although conflicted about it, given my involvement with the music industry and the fact that browsing the second hand record stores was a passion of mine for many years, that overall I'm fine with it. We live in changing times. The way we record and edit the music mostly digitally today (unless you have serious money for a tape machine and tape to use with it) has opened up doors to people with nothing more than a computer, a small economic recording interface, such as an Mbox 2 mini and some software like ProTools LE or Cubase to name just a few to do anything from laying down some rough demos to recording, editing and mixing a full project. What this has led to is more music being out there. With the advent of the internet and sites like The-muzic.com being created and attracting members and communities, the need for me to go into a record store to hear exciting new and original music is now greatly diminished.

The record stores will always have their place. I still regard myself as a collector of vinyl and if I'm somewhere away from home traveling, I love to check the music stores and buy some of the local bands' CDs to see what the scene is like there. I don't think that this will ever change. However, the mainstream music market place really is now online. The manager of U2, Paul McGuinness recently gave a speech at the big music conference Midem concerning the whole digital download issue and regulation of the internet to ensure that music that is being shared and downloaded is paid for. It's a long speech, you can read it here

Overall, it is the opinion of this particular music industry person (me) that whilst there have been some pretty cool forms of recording and reproducing music, like 1 and 2 inch tape and vinyl, and we can always look back on the "good old days", we need to embrace technology as well and utilise it for the purposes of good; affordable recording for bands and artists that have some amazing music to bring the world and to shy away from it's evil uses; autotuning someone's vocals so heavily that they are transformed from a talentless, practically tone deaf hack, to a multi-million selling "artist" with fake breasts and a perfect smile. After all, music is for listening to primarily and before MTV that was how it was judged.

Anyway, Easter is running away and the summer is coming at us at a rapid pace. I hope that all the bands and artists that are reading this are inspired to go and lay down their own little piece of musical genius and post it on The-muzic.com for us here at Pied Piper Records to hear. I look forward to hearing the fruits of your labour very soon.

The Pied Piper

South By Southwest

South By Southwest Hello readers. Welcome to the official SXSW report. Official in that it exists. Pied Piper Records was in attendance this year with our latest signing Koopa. It was a good time in Austin Texas with bands from all over the world playing on stages in a vast number of locations, both indoors and out. With Koopa due to go into the studio with Mark Hoppus in a couple of weeks there were some press commitments to be tended to so it made for a busy week. Leaving early Wednesday morning to begin the 13 hour drive from our base in Nashville to Austin, we made it as far as Dallas, where we stopped for the night before resuming early the next morning. After arriving on Thursday, our first show was the British Music party, an outdoor event where we caught the last couple of acts, the Rascals and Scouting For Girls play short sets and entertain the free beer swilling crowd. The boys did an interview with BBC Radio 1 and also managed to squeeze in a photo with Scouting For Girls before we left. After this we checked into one of the cheesier hotels I have seen, the Days Inn North Austin where we all had our names mispronounced by the check-in staff before going for some R&R. The show on our calendar that evening was the Be Happy Tour show. The bands of note were Wheatus, The Presidents of the USA (who rocked the house, look out for their latest single, the name escapes me but I'm sure it will get radio play) and the Headline Act, Bowling for Soup. Koopa were invited backstage to meet Bowling For Soup and the Presidents and we all had a chat to the guys. They were all extremely friendly and much frivolity ensued. Bowling for Soup put on a great show to finish off a heavy first night in Austin. With a radio interview at 8am the following morning we were concerned that the breakfast presenters would raise an eyebrow at the guys turning up after a couple of hours in an alcohol induced coma, however the guys arrived to find that the hosts were in a bigger mess than the band was, so the interview went well and the guys played an acoustic track in the studio. BlazeTV also did an interview with the guys which went out around the USA as part of their SXSW coverage. Roco De Luca was on after the guys so we got to meet him outside the studio as well. It was a pretty quiet Friday night so we took the opportunity to get some rest as Saturday was a 2 gig day with one at lunchtime and one in the evening. So Saturday, Koopa found themselves onstage at the Monster showcase, about to tune up and start when a certain guitarist comes to the side of stage and says "I've left my guitar strap in Nashville" this led to us asking every band in the place for a lend of a guitar strap, which did happen thanks to the following band. It was more of a metal lineup, but the boys held their own and played a good set. Then it was time to chill for a few hours before the evening show at the Wave bar on 6th street. 6th street is the main strip in Austin and there is venue after venue after venue for a good mile or so. I took the opportunity during the afternoon to check out an Australian songsmith/poet, Paul Kelly. He was excellent despite a few technical difficulties like his microphone stand falling over as he was playing, and his son played lead which was cool. Anyways, onto the Wave show and despite some questionable organisation by the events' co-ordinator, we managed to arrange the sound, instruments etc so that the show could go on. With the drinking laws as they are here in the USA (21 and over to drink alcohol) we were faced with the ludicrous situation of sound-checking and then having to leave the venue until 5 mins before the show before they would let one of the guys back in. The show went off well, despite the sound guy doing his best to ignore the whole show and listening to his iPod whilst the guys played. There were some of the crazy energy fans that Koopa have become accustomed to attracting in the UK that were moshing in the front of the stage and generally making all the older more refined on-lookers nervous, but in all it was cool and the guys were well received. After a day of winding down and seeing Austin without all the people, we headed back to Nashville, this time doing the trip in one go. 15 1/2 hours later, with leg cramps and eyes that would not focus, we made it back to the welcoming hills of Nashville Tennessee and proceeded to sleep. In all it was an excellent experience and one which we hope to share with many other young bands over the coming years. To those of you reading that are in a band, keep up the hard work and events like SXSW are the fruits of your labour.
